Tips for Public Speaking - Part 3

As we discussed in Part II of this series, it is vital that you always make eye contact with your audience. Before we continue on this point, let’s briefly return to our story yesterday about the interesting series of psychology experiments which were done in California at a high school in the late 1970s concerning validating and paying attention to people.

People NEED Validation
As we explained yesterday, a student was chosen from a class, without his knowledge, for the specific purpose of being ignored.

Not knowing that this was going on, each time he went to ask the teacher a question or turn around and talk to his friends in school, everyone blatantly ignored him and didn’t say anything.

At first, this student got upset. Then, after about 30 minutes, he essentially "gave up," and actually put his head down on his desk, and went to sleep.

This was the top student in the entire class. He had never slept in any class before. Yet he did now.

When he was asked how he "felt" afterwards, after being told of course that he was the subject of an experiment, he admitted that it "bothered" him, and that he got so depressed by being ignored, he just put his head down and dozed off.

By ignoring this student, he wasn’t validated as a human being. Nothing he said or did mattered. This really "got" to him, because we ALL want to "feel" both needed and loved, we want to be given "credit" for being at least credible in people’s eyes.

In this same way, when speaking in public, you MUST also "validate" your audience. Unless the specific nature of your speech demands that people just "shut up and listen" per se, you must not only validate your audience, but genuinely make them feel as if they are a PART of your presentation, and are not just some people to perform in front of.
