Promising "Change"
While it is not unusual for politicians to over promise and under deliver, this year’s American Presidential election is very different. Not only does the average American want the status quo to change, they have made it clear that the status quo is no longer "good enough."
What this means is that more and more Americans are beginning to look beyond the binary and over-simplified two party behemoth that is Republicans and Democrats.
Enter Barack Obama
Barack Obama’s upset victory over previously believed to be "invincible" Hillary Clinton, is significant for two main reasons: 1) it was completely unexpected, many so-called "experts" figured he would place no better than third; 2) most voters who consider themselves to be independents not tied to any party voted overwhelmingly for Obama.
This independent vote was not just a "protest" move, it was a legitimate endorsement. In this election, they have made it clear that Obama is "their man," and in their minds a real candidate for real change, versus just another politician who claims they want change in order to secure votes.
Worrying about the undecideds
It is this independent or swing vote which both scares and intrigues the Democrat and Republican parties. For it is this swing vote which holds the very real possibility that it could determine the results of this election.
Unlike the Czech system of parliamentary democracy, Americans vote directly for their President. This means that if Obama is considered to be the "real deal" even by people who would normally vote for a Republican, he will certainly win.
Joke of the Day - Politics Years ago, a U.S. Congressman was asked what his opinion was about Czech beer. Never having tried a Czech beer in his life, but being a politician, he still felt as if he had to say at least something, otherwise he would appear to be a clueless idiot. So he tried his best. "If you mean that demon drink which is evil, that vile swill which poisons the mind, pollutes your body, desecrates all family life and inflames sinners, then of course I’m against all Czech beers. "But if you mean the elixir of life, that Christmas cheer, that tasty shield against Winter’s chill; that taxable potion which puts badly needed money into public coffers to help feed little orphans, then I’m for Czech beers. This is my position and I will never compromise!" |
