I’m not sure that the "best" place to hunt for alligators is the Mississippi River. While they exist in the swamps of New Orleans and certainly Florida, hunting them is NOT something Americans normally do.
If you are serious about this, you should contact the local authorities in area you’ll visit. Not only will you need a permit to hunt ANY animal, but the one you have indicated is extremely dangerous and as far as I know is not allowed to be hunted by the average person. Once again, please check first with the local authorities in the state you are planning to visit.

To answer your question, yes, it is TRUE that it is against the law to pump your own gas in the state of Oregon. As far as I know this is the only state in America where this is true.
I’m not sure why this is the case, so I contacted the police department in Eugene, Oregon, and I asked them you question.
Their answer was that this law was put into effect to preserve jobs. Many gas stations in Amrica are self-service or have NO human beings present at all, and Oregon lawmakers did not want people to lose their jobs.
