True story: Trying to Learn Czech - Part 3

Once upon a time, there was this American. He visited Prague a few years ago, and after seeing it, even before he met his first Czech woman, he fell in "love" with the city and decided to leave the United States of America and settle down in the Czech Republic.

After moving here, he moved to tackle the Czech language. Not understanding that Czech is one of the most difficult languages to learn in the entire world, he was surprised when he read books about it.

Not speaking
While reading about the language and learning phrases are written was one thing, trying to pronounce Czech was even more challenging.

First off, there are those bazillion ways to put endings on words, what Czechs call the "richness" of their language, or the "flexibility" in it.

To Americans used to speaking American English, the USAers tend to call this "difficult" or "ridiculously hard." Still others ask: "Why?"

Taking a "class"
Not being able to get very far reading Czech, he of course then decided to enroll into a class.

He picked one of the top universities here in Prague, one which has a reputation for being stupidly expensive, but at least if you pay their fees, you end up getting what you overpaid for.

This American lasted through just a single class of Czech, which was three hours long.

On this one and only day, after covering absolutely NO basics of the language, nor even how to pronounce unique Czech sounds, as the class was leaving the instructor handed each student a card.

Printed on this card was the Czech alphabet. When the teacher was asked WHY she didn’t START the class off with the alphabet, she replied that the card was being given out in case anyone was curious!
