As we discussed in part one, it is vital that you remember your audience. If you do not always keep them in mind and at the forefront of your efforts, you run the risk of "losing" them or never communicating effectively at all.

The second important factor when speaking in public is called finding the common ground.

If you cannot essentially "bond" with your audience or find that magic way to "connect" to them, whatever it is that you have to say will never be remembered.

3. Eye Contact/Working the Room
One of the most interesting things about people, is that everyone either expects or wants to be "validated" in some form or another.

This is true at all times, and it should never be forgotten.

In 1979, a very interesting series of psychology experiments were conducted in a high school class in California. Basically, the experiment went like this:

A single student was chosen by the rest of the class, without this student’s knowledge, to be the test subject or "Guinea pig."

The next day, when this student sat in his Psychology class, neither the teacher nor anyone else in the room paid him any attention. They in fact refused to.

This was very unusual, because this student was very famous and was also the top student in the class. He was used to being heard, and he was used to talking to many people.

Not knowing that he was the subject of an experiment, and that everyone was deliberately ignoring him, he became very agitated.
